Reflux, also known as acid reflux, is a painful condition caused by stomach acid being allowed up into the esophagus. This can cause heartburn or other similar symptoms.

Reflux can occur to people at any age, and frequent reflux can lead to GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease). In babies, reflux causes vomiting during or just after feeding.
Treatments for reflux include many varieties of medication and the recommendation of diet and lifestyle changes, with the possible use of surgery in extreme cases.

Reflux Baton Rouge

Using chiropractic treatment for reflux does not involve medication or surgery but helps to resolve the cause of the issue.

What causes Reflux?

At the top of your stomach there is a muscle-controlled opening. It is meant to open to allow food to pass through, then closes to allow the stomach to process the food with acid. The lining of the stomach is made to withstand this acid, and the processed food exits the stomach from a lower opening.

Reflux occurs when the acid exits the stomach through the uppermost opening. This can because of a weakness in the muscles controlling the opening, or because of excess pressure on the stomach, or a combination of both.

In some cases, this pressure is caused by obesity, but that is not always true.

How is Reflux treated?

Medications are often prescribed to neutralize stomach acid or alternatively reduce the amount of stomach acid produced. These medications may have side effects with long term use including diarrhea, headaches, nausea, fatigue, and even increased risk of bone fractures.

Surgery can be used wherein the muscles are tightened or an artificial device is installed to increase the strength of the seal at the top of the stomach.

Chiropractic Treatment for Reflux

By ensuring the correct alignment of your spine, your body will become balanced and all muscle groups will work as intended. Pressure may have been added to your stomach by underperforming muscles, weakened and not working optimally due to their inefficient attachment to your skeleton.

Rectifying your posture and taking stress off areas that should not be subjected to stress at all will reduce the symptoms and treat the cause of many cases of reflux. It will also help you to use your musculature more effectively and build up strength where it is needed.
